St George takes in the busy centres of Hurstville, Kogarah and Rockdale, linked by the Princes Highway and the Illawarra rail line. Most auto electrical work here is on daily drivers in dense streets and apartment car parks, plus vans from the light industrial strips.

Suburbs in St George

St George is one of Sydney's older established districts, and it is getting denser. Hurstville is a high-rise centre where many cars live in basement car parks. Kogarah is a medical and commercial hub built around St George Hospital and the station, with some light industry. Rockdale has a long shopping strip on the Princes Highway, light industry near West Botany Street and Botany Bay a short drive east down Bay Street. Cars here rack up stop-start kilometres rather than highway runs, which shapes most faults.

Common auto electrical jobs in St George

These jobs come up again and again across St George. Each suburb has its own angle.

Batteries worn down by traffic

The Princes Highway and Forest Road are slow for much of the day, and many local cars rarely get a run longer than a few kilometres. That keeps batteries partly charged most of the time, which shortens their life. A car that has been parked for a week in an apartment car park can then fail to start. Testing the battery and charging system together tells you what actually needs replacing. Our guide how to test a car battery shows the basics.

Dashcams for busy roads

Merging lanes on the Princes Highway, tight car parks and plenty of buses make dashcams a common request in St George. A front and rear setup that is hard-wired to the fuse box looks tidy and frees up the power socket. If you want parking mode, a hardwire kit with a low-voltage cut-off protects the battery. The cable for the rear camera needs to be routed carefully through the boot or tailgate hinge so it doesn't fray.

Vans from the light industrial strips

Kogarah and Rockdale both have light industry tucked behind the main roads, and plenty of trade and delivery vans run out of them. Common jobs are tail lights and brake lights that fail, reversing cameras for vans without rear windows, and power sockets for tools and chargers. Keeping lights working is also a roadworthy issue, so a quick walk-around check each week saves trouble. How to replace a brake light globe covers the simple fix.
