The Northern Beaches runs from the workshops and car yards of Brookvale up through the apartment blocks of Dee Why to Mona Vale and the Pittwater waterways. Salt air, boat trailers, tradie vans and short coastal trips drive most of the auto electrical work here.

Suburbs in Northern Beaches

Pittwater Road ties the whole area together, but the vehicles along it change as you head north. Brookvale is the working end, with light industry, car dealerships and vehicle services, so vans and utes are everywhere. Dee Why is the most populous suburb on the beaches and mostly apartments, which means short trips, basement parking and lots of small cars. Mona Vale sits where Mona Vale Road meets Pittwater Road, close to the boat ramps and marinas of Pittwater, so trailers and salt-exposed wiring come up often.

Common auto electrical jobs in Northern Beaches

Being on the coast changes how car electrics age. These are the jobs that come up again and again between Brookvale and Mona Vale.

Salt air and corroded connections

Cars that live a few streets from the beach collect a fine film of salt that works its way into battery terminals, earth straps and plug connectors. The first signs are usually slow cranking, flickering lights or a sensor fault that comes and goes. Cleaning terminals early and protecting them with a light coat of terminal grease saves a lot of trouble. If you can see white or green crust on the battery posts, our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals walks through it safely.

Boat trailer lights

Plenty of beaches locals launch at Pittwater ramps, and dunking a trailer in salt water is hard on lights and wiring. Globes corrode in their sockets, earths fail, and plugs go green inside. Sealed LED trailer lights and a fresh plug fix most of it. Disconnect the plug before reversing down the ramp so the car side is not exposed, and hose the trailer down with fresh water when you get home, including the lights.

Dashcams and reversing cameras

Tight driveways, steep streets and busy beach car parks make cameras popular here. A reversing camera helps with boat trailers and big vans, while a dashcam records what happens on Pittwater Road during peak hour. Hardwiring a dashcam to a switched fuse keeps the cable tidy and stops it draining the battery overnight. Front and rear dashcam kits and wireless reversing cameras both suit most local cars.

Batteries that give up early

Short runs to the beach, the shops and the bus stop rarely give the alternator enough time to top the battery back up. Add summer heat and salt, and batteries on the beaches often fail sooner than people expect. A quick test tells you whether the battery, the charging system or something draining power is to blame. If you keep getting caught out, read why a car battery keeps going flat before you buy another one.
