Common auto electrical jobs in Sutherland
Sutherland is an older commuter centre built around the station, with established homes and the Woronora River nearby. Many local cars are commuting cars, and many are getting on in age.
Is it the starter or the battery?
A car that won't start after a day parked near Sutherland station could have a flat battery, a failing starter motor or a bad connection between them. A single click, a fast clicking noise and a slow grinding crank each point to different faults. Testing the battery first is the logical place to start, then the starter circuit. Our guide is it my starter motor or my battery helps you narrow it down.

Alternators on highway commuters
Plenty of Sutherland drivers head south on the Princes Highway toward the Illawarra, or north toward the city, every day. Those kilometres add up on the alternator. Warning signs include a battery light, lights that dim at idle and a whining noise from the engine. Newer cars may have smart alternators that behave differently from older ones, so the testing needs to match the car. See what is a smart alternator.

Indicators and globes on older cars
Sutherland's established streets have plenty of older cars still going strong. Their bulbs, sockets and indicator flasher units wear out over time. If your indicators start flashing fast, it usually means a globe on that side has blown. A dim tail light may be a corroded socket rather than a bad globe. These are simple, cheap fixes that keep the car safe and roadworthy. See why are my indicators flashing fast.

Old wiring and burning smells
As cars age, insulation hardens and cracks, plugs loosen and old aftermarket add-ons start to fail. A smell of hot plastic, a fuse that keeps blowing or a light that flickers over bumps can all point to wiring problems. Don't ignore a burning smell. Pull over, turn the car off and get it checked before driving further. Our guide burning smell or smoke from car wiring explains what to do.

Sutherland auto electrical questions
My car clicks but won't start after sitting at the station all day. What's wrong?
A single click often means the starter is getting a signal but not enough current, which points to a weak battery, a loose terminal or a failing starter. Rapid clicking usually means a flat battery. Try a jump start. If it fires straight up, test the battery and charging system soon. If it still only clicks, the starter or its wiring needs checking.
Is it safe to drive with the battery light on?
Only for a short distance. The battery light means the charging system isn't working properly, so the car is running on battery power alone. Depending on the battery and what is switched on, you may get a short distance before the car stops. Turn off the aircon and other loads, head straight to a safe spot and get the charging system tested.
Why did my indicator start flashing faster than normal?
A fast flash usually means one globe on that side has blown, so the flasher sees less load and speeds up. Check the front, rear and side repeaters on that side. If all globes work, look for a corroded socket or poor earth. LED globes fitted without the right load resistors can also cause fast flashing.
Local tip for Sutherland
If you park all day at Sutherland station, take a minute when you get back to the car to notice how it starts. A crank that sounds slower than usual, especially on a cold morning, is often the first sign of a tired battery. Getting it tested that week gives you time to replace it before you are stuck in the commuter car park after dark.
