Common auto electrical jobs in Padstow

Padstow is mostly residential, but its northern end near the M5 has light industrial units, and plenty of locals park a work ute in the driveway. That gives the suburb a strong trade flavour.

Inverters for power tools on site

Tradies around Padstow often want to charge tool batteries or run a small tool straight from the ute. An inverter can do that, but only if it is sized for the load and fed with heavy enough cable from the battery. Undersized cable gets hot, drops voltage and makes the inverter shut down under load. It also needs a fuse close to the battery. Our guide on how to choose and install an inverter explains sizing in plain terms.

Work lights and reverse lights on utes

Early starts and late finishes mean a lot of loading in the dark. LED work lights on the tray or canopy, plus brighter reverse lights for backing into tight driveways, are popular upgrades. Wire them through a relay and a switch on the dash rather than straight off an existing circuit, so you don't overload factory wiring. Water getting into cheap connectors is the main reason these lights fail, so sealed plugs are worth the extra few dollars.

Tidying up years of add-ons

A work ute that has had three owners can end up with a mess of wiring under the dash: old two-way radio feeds, a removed light bar, taps into random circuits. These leftover wires cause flat batteries, blown fuses and faults that come and go. Stripping out what is no longer used and labelling what stays is often the cheapest way to fix a vehicle that keeps having odd electrical problems. A multimeter makes the job easier, and how to use a multimeter on a car is a good start.

Box trailers for tip runs and jobs

Plenty of Padstow households and tradies own a box trailer. They sit outside for months, the plug fills with grit and the earth wire rusts through. Then the lights fail on the day you need it. Cleaning the plug pins, checking the earth at the trailer frame and swapping old globes for sealed LED lamps fixes most of these. If the car side is the problem, a test light at the socket will tell you quickly.

Padstow auto electrical questions

What size inverter do I need to charge cordless tool batteries in my ute?

Most tool battery chargers draw a few hundred watts, so a quality pure sine wave inverter in the 300 to 600 watt range usually covers it. Check the label on your charger first. The bigger job is the cabling: it needs to be heavy enough for the current, fused near the battery and kept short. A weak ute battery will also struggle, so many tradies add a second battery.

Why do my trailer lights work on one car but not another?

Usually the problem is the earth, the plug type or the way the second car is wired. Some cars run lights through a module that needs a proper towbar harness, and some plugs have bent or corroded pins. Test the car socket with a test light, then check the trailer earth at the drawbar. An adaptor between 7-pin and 12-pin plugs can also be the weak link.

Local tip for Padstow

If your ute lives in the driveway and only does short runs to local jobs, fit a battery voltage display on the dash. It is a cheap add-on and shows when the battery is sitting below about 12.4 volts at rest. Catching that early means a recharge or a new battery on your terms, not a no-start on a job morning.
