Common auto electrical jobs in Mascot

Mascot is shaped by Sydney Airport, which is a major local employer, and by the freight yard on the goods line. Around three quarters of homes are apartments, so household jobs here look a lot like the inner city.

Shuttle buses and minibuses

Hotel, car park and crew shuttles run constant loops around Mascot, the terminals and nearby hotels. Doors open and close all day, the air con never stops, and the engine idles for long periods. That combination is hard on alternators, door switches and blower motors. Shuttles also often carry extra electronics such as two-way radios, PA systems and cameras, each of which needs a properly fused supply. Regular charging system checks prevent breakdowns with passengers aboard.

Freight forwarder vans

Freight and courier businesses along O'Riordan Street and Coward Street move air cargo in vans and small rigid trucks. These vehicles do short hops with long idles at loading docks, which leaves batteries undercharged. Scanners, tablets and phone chargers add to the load. Where a van has a smart alternator, adding accessories can need a DC-DC charger to keep any second battery topped up. Our guide on smart alternators explains why.

Beacons for airport-area vehicles

Many vehicles working around freight terminals, construction sites and car parks near the airport need amber beacons and, sometimes, extra strobes. Rules vary by site, so check the requirement before buying. A permanently mounted beacon looks tidier and is less likely to fall off than a magnetic one, and the cable doesn't get pinched in the door. Wiring it through a switch with an indicator light reduces the chance it gets left on overnight.

Cars left while travelling

Mascot residents and airport staff often leave cars parked while they're away for work or holidays. Coming back to a car that won't start is a common call-out. Batteries older than three or four years are most at risk. Fitting a small maintainer where there's power, or using a quality lithium jump starter kept charged at home, makes the return trip less stressful. A battery test before a long trip also tells you whether it will last.

Rideshare and hybrid cars

Airport pick-ups make Mascot a hub for rideshare drivers, many of whom drive hybrids. Long waits in holding areas with the air con running, followed by stop-start traffic on Botany Road, add wear to the 12V battery, cooling fans and switches. A hybrid that won't go into ready mode is often a 12V battery problem. The 12V side is routine work, but the high-voltage system is for licensed professionals with hybrid training only.

Mascot auto electrical questions

Can an auto electrician come to the airport long-term car park?

Some mobile auto electricians will attend airport car parks, but access rules, height limits and the car park operator's own policies can make it harder. Check with the car park first. For a flat battery, many car park operators can help with a jump start, and you can get the battery tested once you're home.

Do our shuttle buses need a dual battery system?

If the shuttle runs radios, PA systems or cameras while the engine is off, a second battery protects the starting battery. Vehicles that run the engine whenever they're in use may not need one. A load assessment based on what's fitted and how long the engine is off will show whether it's worth adding.

Local tip for Mascot

If you work shifts at the airport and park your car for days at a time, get the battery tested once a year, ideally before winter. Cold mornings and long periods without driving are when tired batteries give up. Replacing a weak battery before a trip is far easier than dealing with it in a dark car park.
