Common auto electrical jobs in Emu Plains

Emu Plains has a strong touring and 4WD culture thanks to its spot at the base of the mountains, so the work leans towards towing and off-grid power.

Dual battery systems

Weekends in the Blue Mountains and longer trips west mean plenty of Emu Plains vehicles run fridges, lights and camp gear. A dual battery system keeps the starting battery safe while a second battery powers the accessories. Choosing between a DC-DC charger and an isolator depends on your vehicle and its alternator. Our guide how does a dual battery system work explains the basics before you start buying parts.

Electric brakes for the climb

The climb up Lapstone Hill and the long descents further into the mountains test a caravan's brakes. Electric brakes only work well when the controller is set up correctly, wired with solid cable and adjusted for the load. A controller that cuts out, or brakes that feel weak, need checking before the next trip, not halfway down a hill. See how to install an electric brake controller.

12-pin plugs and caravan wiring

Many caravans now use a 12-pin plug, which carries charging and auxiliary power as well as lights. Adapters between 7-pin and 12-pin are common, but they need the right wiring to work properly, and a cheap adapter can leave the van battery uncharged. Corrosion at the plug is still the most common fault of all. Our guide 7-pin vs 12-pin trailer plugs explains what each pin does.

4WD lighting and accessories

Tracks and campsites in the mountains and beyond draw 4WD owners through Emu Plains most weekends. Driving lights, light bars, UHF radios and air compressors all need correctly sized cable, relays and fuses. Poor wiring can melt under load or let water into connectors. Check that any driving lights you fit meet NSW rules. Our guide on how to wire a 12V relay shows the standard setup for driving lights.

Emu Plains auto electrical questions

Why isn't my caravan battery charging while I tow up the mountains?

Most often the cable from the car to the caravan is too thin, so the voltage drops before it reaches the van battery. Smart alternators in newer cars make this worse by lowering their output once the car's own battery is full. A DC-DC charger usually fixes it. Also check the 12-pin plug, the pins and the fuses.

Do I need a brake controller for my camper trailer?

It depends on whether the trailer has electric brakes. Trailers fitted with electric brakes need a controller in the tow vehicle to operate them. Check the trailer's compliance plate and brake type before you buy a controller. If you're unsure, an auto electrician can confirm what's fitted and what the car needs.

Local tip for Emu Plains

Before heading up the mountains with a van, do a full light and brake check in your driveway, not at the top of Lapstone Hill. Have someone stand behind the van while you work the indicators, brakes and tail lights. Then test the brake controller at low speed on a quiet local street before you join the highway.
